Project Based Learning and Sustainability Education

A one-day introduction to the core content and competencies of Sustainability Education through examples of exemplary student work that show students engaged with their communities and involved in authentic, life long learning. Participants will leave with a shared understanding of sustainability education and identified examples of leverage points for change and growth in their own curriculum and context.

“Louise’s presentation was a marvelous way to open our minds to merging exemplary student work with the notion of sustainability and systems. Her presentation was vital in bringing together the two ideas of creativity and sustainability; her enthusiasm was magical and very inspiring.” Winter Institute participant, St. Louis, 2008

Interpreting The Reggio Approach for Elementary Classrooms

Examples of multidisciplinary projects and excellent student work will lead participants to think together about how these principles and practices can apply to their own work in school. Participants will leave with a shared understanding of the fundamentals of the Reggio Approach and several identified goals and action steps for their own contexts.

“Louise Cadwell and her colleagues have honored the work of the schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy in the best possible way. In the book, Bringing Learning to Life, they give us vivid portraits of students’ and teachers’ work and learning through the exploration of the meaning of Reggio’s work in their own schools. “ Steve Seidel, Director Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education

Strengths Assessment and Recommendations

Strengths Assessment and Recommendations for Early Childhood Programs

We interview school leaders in order to understand the dreams and goals that you have for your school. After a period of observation in your school, we compose and share our observations highlighting your strengths and leverage points for growth. In an afternoon workshop we weave together your strengths with possibilities for future growth. We offer specific examples from other school contexts that can inspire and lead to next steps in your school’s development. Participants will leave with a shared understanding of leverage points for their collective growth, and an action plan for first action steps toward their vision.

Strengths Assessment and Recommendations for Elementary Schools

We work with school leaders to determine specific visions and goals for your school. After a period of observation in your school, we prepare and present a document with images and descriptors that focus on your strengths and highlight leverage points for growth. In an afternoon workshop we build on your strengths and offer specific examples from other school contexts that can inspire and lead to next steps in your development. Participants will leave with a shared understanding of selected strengths, entry points for building on those strengths, and an action plan of first steps that lead toward their vision.

“Louise’s and Ashley’s reflections have been an invaluable resource in the development of our school. Their thoughtful participation in dialogue with our staff as we have sought to improve, focus, and better understand our work over the years is something we have benefited from and looked forward to tremendously.” Susan Harris MacKay, author, researcher and teacher at The Opal School of the Portland Children’s Museum

Project Coaching and Product Development

We support faculty in the development of small scale, integrated, multidisciplinary, real world projects that involve students and teachers in research and learning around a specific focus. We assist teachers and students in preparing and publishing a product or result that influences both the participants and the community to shift toward a healthy, hopeful future.

Participants will leave with a product or in house published book that can be posted on school websites, sold in local businesses and shared with other educators and community members.

“It has been a dream come true to work with Louise Cadwell over the last three years. She continues to help us create innovative curricula that models learning as a transformative experience. Louise challenges the status quo of education and envisions with us schools as they should be for all children.” Dr. Ena Shelley, Dean, College of Education, Butler University, Indianapolis, Indiana

School Design: Pedagogy, Systems Organization, & Architecture

Cadwell Collaborative serves effectively as the translator of pedagogy into school design, acting as a bridge between educational leadership and architects.

We collaborate in the design of new buildings, additions and renovations. Our designs will reflect a new way of thinking about school and school buildings such that the form of the buildings and spaces support myriad learning styles, multiple disciplines, collaboration, and authentic youth engagement in the communities.

“Ashley has been an inspired leader, mentor and teacher to the faculty and staff in addition to being a builder, an architect, a writer and an artist. His vision launched our school toward what it is today; a school with an innovative, creative, collaborative curriculum and environment with a world-wide reputation.” Kathy Dicke, Business Manager, The St. Michael School

Seminars in St. Louis

One of the best ways to understand how to educate for sustainability and to inspire excellent, creative student work is to visit exemplary schools. We work with one or more of the schools of the St. Louis Reggio Collaborative, (The St. Michael School, Clayton Schools Family Center and The College School) to design seminars that can combine any of the introductory workshops we offer with school visits, classroom observations, and conversations with teachers. Participants will leave with photographs, notes, and materials that will guide them move toward their own visions and goals in their own contexts.

“Thank you for hosting such high caliber professional development. It was like a vitamin shot for me personally and professionally. When I reflect on gratitude – I am so grateful for your commitment to educators.” Participant at Winter Institute, St. Louis 2008

“I have not been to any other schools where evidence of student work and student understanding was so prevalent and so available to the outside visitor. The student writing, scientific and cultural studies, drawings, paintings and all the displayed work are remarkable.” Joshua Hahn, Director, Stone Bridge, Sustainability and Education
